What do we mean by Tour Guide?
Tour Guide: Any person, paid or voluntary, who provides information to a group of tourists on an established tour of any length. There are a range of Tour Guide titles throughout Australia (and the world) from City Sights Guide, and Meet and Greet Guides to Driver Guides, Ecotour Guides and Adventure Guides. Guides work in a variety of areas (cities, regional and remote), work in any number of natural, cultural and heritage environments and conduct tours of varying length from 30 minutes to 30 days. There are Tour Guides, Tourist Guides, Tour Managers and Tour Directors (to name a few) - the target markets vary, the transport varies, the tour content varies, the length of time spent with clients varies and our attitudes vary; but we all have a similar job in the Tourism Industry – we all conduct tours with tourists. Some roles require specialisation in one area; others in another area and yet others require skills that some will not often use. But in order to be effective in our roles we all require a similar set of basic skills - the ability to take specific information and present it in an interesting and educative manner to a group of tourists (interpretation). So for ease of use, this website is using the generic term "Tour Guide" to mean all of the above - despite some arguable differences. |
